What will happen at my first appointment?

Medical History Assessment

At your initial appointment, we go through a comprehensive assessment of all your medical history, because it is important to understand any underlying issues that may be affecting your feet. This will include listing all your medication, so having a prescription list handy is useful if you are on quite a few different tablets. You will be surprised to find out what we need to know!

Assessment of circulation and sensation

  • With someone Ive not seen before, I will always check circulation to their feet to make sure there are no issues with the blood flow. This is done using an ultrasound Doppler to detect what the pulses are like in your feet. Even with children, I have picked up issues with the heart through this that require further investigation.
  • I then check your sensation to make sure you can feel 10 grams of pressure using a monofilament

Treatment plan

  • Treatment for your foot issue/ problem will be discussed with you and treatment will commence within that initial appointment
  • Any follow up appointments will be discussed and arranged at the time to ensure continuity and optimal treatment results

NHS vs Private Podiatry Care?

As we all know, the face of the NHS is changing. Access to services is becoming much more difficult, even with seeing a GP in our own health centres can be a challenge. The NHS Podiatry service now focuses on lower limb life threatening conditions, hence why so many people are now seeking private health care. The great advantage of my role is that I can always directly refer to the NHS to get in touch with other professionals, request bloods, request x-rays or ultrasounds and further assessments ect if needed. Offering private podiatry appointments offers you quicker access, short waiting times and more flexibility including weekends and evening appointments if needed.

Also another large advantage or private podiatry is the access to an increased range of treatments that the NHS has either stopped or just doesn’t provide. These can be offering treatments for verrucas, strapping for foot pain and cosmetic podiatry ( Nail Reconstruction and holistic treatments)

Foot Health Professional (FHP) Versus Podiatrist- What is the difference?

This is an issue that is quite a grey area for patients as they are unaware of the differences between an FHP and a Podiatrist. Many people think because FHP’s can treat feet, then they must be fully qualified, but this is not always the case. The main differences are between training, scope of practice and the treatments offered.

  • FHP’s undergo much less training at 1 year compared with 3-4 years for a podiatrist
  • FHP’s are unable to assess and diagnose foot conditions/ fungal nails and verrucas, but can help treat these if a formal diagnosis has been made by podiatry
  • FHP’s can carry out basic footcare such as cutting nails and removing hard skin, but are not able to carry out nail surgery, treat complex foot problems or suggest prescriptions of for example antibiotics or medicaments needed under the GP. Podiatrists have the scope to treat chronic foot and leg conditions.
  • FHP’s can be members of their own registration body, but are not regulated under the Health Care Professions Council. Podiatrists cannot practice without being regulated and I am also a member of The Royal College of Podiatry which is our own professional body.

Your feet are in safe hands as I have extensive scope as a specialist podiatrist in the NHS and have 20 years of experience in the lower limb and foot.

Do you provide Nail Surgery?

Yes, this is a service I offer at an affiliated clinic in the Preston area. I will always initially assess a patient first to see if this is a treatment plan that would be suitable. I always discuss the pros and cons of every treatment choice, and from there a pre-op nail surgery assessment is completed. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic. Depending if part of the nail needs removing, all the nail and how many nails are involved, investment start at £400. Please contact for further information.

Fingernail cutting

I am insured under the Royal College of Podiatrists to offer a fingernail cutting service for an additional charge. Please ask to request this to be added on to any treatment.

Can I claim my podiatry appointments back through private health insurance?

If you have a private health insurance scheme, then it is likely you will be able to claim all or a proportion of your podiatry treatment back. Check first with your health provider and I can then issue a detailed receipt that can be sent back to them with the details. Some people are not even aware that their medical insurance covers podiatry, so its always worth checking so you can make the most out of this benefit.

Do I need anything with me?

No, I don’t require you to have anything specific with you for appointments, although if it is your first appointment, it can be useful to have a prescription list which details your medication. I bring my own stool and foot rest if needed.
